Emma here! This morning was beautiful. Frost, sunshine – and in our woods on our morning dog-walk, Flower Frost! We;ve not seen much Flower Frost these past few months – it's been a mild winter so far. For previous photos of Flower Frost click here>>
The sunshine seemed to bring out all the birds in the woods too. The usual Winter Wrens and Robins, and the gorgeous tiny Golden Crowned Kinglets. I watched one hovering (few birds are small and agile enough to do this!) underneath a fern frond. Suddenly it launched itself at the frond, grabbing and pulling it down with its little beak. The frond then sproinged back and forth vigorously such was the force of the tug. I presume some poor bug had become breakfast!
Also spotted – the ground-nesting bees have been out. Their little round holes in the ground had been covered with leaves and now there are little round holes in the leaves on the ground, exactly over the holes.
It's early January, so we can't really say "Spring is coming" yet. But it certainly felt like it this morning…
