Wow so its been a year since our last post. We must have been busy… We will try to travel back in time and fill in some of the gaps.
Anyway this weekend was the annual fall fair with the theme of Gumboots and Island Roots (Gumboots are Wellies for those reading from the UK). This was very appropriate as it rained a lot, and gum boots were definitely required.
Amongst the attractions are Zucchini racing, lots of yummy food (including the famous pie ladies and Salt Spring Lamb burgers), a livestock show and an amazing display of baking, canning, quilting, vegetables and so much more. And many of these displays are also judged with prizes awarded.
The picture on the right is the winner of the biggest pumpkin – about 635 lbs. I actually saw this coming down our road last Friday (in a truck, not on its own) and apparently it took 8 strong men to load it.
Emma's favorite category is the amusing vegetables in which children create various fiendish animals from local veggies. She is very sad that there isn't an adult category.
We planned on entering a few categories this year, but have just had too much on our plates (like building a holiday cottage and growing lots of our own food) - but there is always next year…
